Minoxidil side effects

Short answer

Most people use topical minoxidil without problems. The most common effects are mild scalp dryness, itching or flaking, often from alcohol or propylene glycol. Rare effects warrant stopping and seeking advice.

Common and mild

  • Dryness or flaking.
  • Itching.
  • Temporary shedding early on.
  • Unwanted facial hair if product spreads to the face.

Staying comfortable

Try a low-alcohol solution or foam, apply only to the scalp and wash hands afterwards.

When to stop and get advice

Stop and contact a doctor for dizziness, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, unexplained swelling or severe scalp reactions. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How to reduce irritation

  • Apply to a dry, intact scalp only.
  • Try a foam or low-alcohol formula if you have dryness.
  • Do not use more than the labelled amount.
  • Avoid applying right after colouring, perming or on sunburned skin.

When to stop and get advice

Stop using minoxidil and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you notice chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness, dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, swelling of the hands or feet, or persistent scalp redness. These are rare, but it is important to act on them.

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have heart conditions, should get advice before using minoxidil.
